Working in media was once considered no place for working parents, but that’s changing.

In this episode of the Family Friendly Workplaces podcast, we explore how the traditionally high-pressure, always-on media industry reimagines itself to support working parents and carers.

From the outside, the demands of 24/7 news cycles, rapid digital evolution, and platform-hopping content creation may not scream “family inclusive.” But beneath the fast pace, positive shifts are happening – thanks to professionals and leaders who are pushing for change.

We speak with Lauren Thornborough, co-founder of The Village, whose own experience navigating parenthood in the media world sparked a movement for greater support and visibility. She shares why media still sees high parental churn and how it can better retain experienced talent.

We’re also joined by Angela Priestley, founding editor of Women’s Agenda, who reflects on building a career and business while becoming a parent, including how a job-share arrangement with fellow advocate Georgie Dent paved the way for a more inclusive newsroom.

Women’s Agenda podcaster Dinushi Dias has a chat with leaders at Novartis and Medicines Australia to hear how they’re doing it.

In a special podcast series produced by Family Friendly Workplaces and Women’s Agenda, we will step into different sectors in Australia to spotlight the challenges working parents face while also speaking to employers carving out new ways of working.

These employers are helping to design a blueprint for workplaces that will enable more workers to thrive no matter what their caring responsibilities are at home.

In this week’s episode, Women’s Agenda founding editor Angela Priestley takes a closer look at the mining and energy industry.

How Family Friendly is the Energy and Resource Sector?

The legal sector has long been considered a demanding and often inflexible career path, particularly for parents.

But is the tide turning? In this episode, we unpack the evolution of family-friendly policies in the legal profession. From the increasing adoption of flexible work arrangements to gender-neutral parental leave, the sector is seeing promising shifts, but challenges remain.
